Tschüss Google, das ist jetzt unser Campus! Lasst uns ins Umspannwerk einziehen!

Why Google is not a good neighbour

What can we do when big tech-companies and start-ups push their way into our neighborhoods

"It is a good day for Berlin", Mayor Michael Müller emphasized when he presented the project of a "Google Campus for Entrepreneurs" in Kreuzberg alongside Google's vice-boss in Germany. Since this announcement Google is building its new Campus at the former substation "Umspannwerk" Ohlauer-Str. /Paul-Linke-Ufer – exactly in the area with the highest jumps in rental prices in Berlin. According to the IT Group, the "Google Campus" should provide developers, founders and investors with a meeting place. At issue is the promotion of entrepreneurship through education and networking. According to Google, the goal is to promote the "Berlin start-up ecosystem". The fact that exactly this praised "start-up ecosystem" is already responsible for displacement pressure on established Kreuzberg cultural institutions, shows the conflict between the Kreuzberg "Privatclub" and one of the "Internet billionaires" (BZ) who owns "Rocket-Internet".

Such a displacement is already completed in another large space in Görlitzer Park. Until recently, the old Agfa factory in Lohmühlenstraße was still home to small businesses, cultural institutions and associations. Now the "Factory Görlitzer Park", the "biggest European club for startups" including a private university for programmers, has been built. Also at the "Factory", a "Google for Entrepreneurs" has been involved.

Anyone who wants to see how such developments pushed by tech companies and start-ups can change an urban area in a very short time must look to San Francisco and the Bay Area with the Silicon Valley. San Francisco, the former city of American counter cultures, LGBTQ movement and Chinese immigrants, has become one of the US's most expensive spots, exacerbated by the entrance of Facebook’s glittering new campus into the city centre in what is said to be the tallest skyscraper on the West Coast, with nearly 70 luxury condos on the upper floors for the super-rich.

On May 16th, we want to talk to different players from politics and neighborhood initiatives in the SO36 about what can be done so that Kreuzberg and Berlin do not have to go the same way as San Francisco or parts of central London, where poor and ordinary people have already been forced out of their neighborhoods.

April 16th - 19:30 - The Stunting of Thought - in the Aquarium (Südblock) Skalitzer Str. 6

(German below)

The stunting of thought -An event within the framework of the anti-Google fight, which is critical of technology and of domination.

The (digital) restructuring of domination precludes our desire for freedom and a self-determined life. That's why we want to focus on the individual, social and emotional impact of everyday use of new digital technologies (eg smartphones, apps, etc.). How can games-like methods (gamification) fool you into making everyday life easier and at the same time let self-thinking, craft and social skills stunt? How important are the real non-virtual experiences for our lives, for our feelings and our experiences? How alienated are personal feelings, dreams and experiences that are minutely portrayed in digital life - or how does emotional pornography work? As a counter concept a hackerdidactic is presented. This concept is for digital self-defense. It should not be about an application of technology, but rather about exposing our personal behaviors. Our approach begins with our own vulnerability and the emotions involved. So how do we encounter the degeneration of our thinking, our feelings and our self-determined life? this event will beheld in english with german translation.

April 15th - 11:30 - kalabal!k, reichenbergerstr. 63

(German Below)

Workshop - in the course of the power-critical and technology-critical fight against the Google campus in Kreuzberg

The (digital) restructuring of domination precludes our desire for freedom and a self-determined life. Therefore, in this workshop, we want to look at the individual, social and emotional implications of the everyday use of new digital technologies. Who does not like to play? Playing is fun, playing gives us a break from everyday life. But is our everyday life a game? Why do we need time off, why in the digital and not in the real world?

Skills will be acquired in the workshop to recognize repetitive, addictive, game-like schemes in everyday digital life. Using practical examples, we will above all analyze hidden game-like offers in the social networks of Facebook, Google and other apps and their alleged relief.

We'll briefly introduce you to the history of video games and go into more detail about the human brain or the human being as a cognitive entity: how does our brain function in learning, how does operant conditioning (repetition and reinforcing behavior through trial and error) work? how games generate short joy and therfore dependencies and thus limited joy and pain associated with it?

One goal is to experiment with ways to more clearly recognize the increasingly encompassing digital domain in order to better escape or attack them. This workshop will be hold in english and translated into german!

Bring your toys or games! sunday 15th of april half past 11 am in kalabal!k, reichenbergerstr. 63

All dies zurecht.

Brave New Work

Zur Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in Berlins Start-Ups

Mo. 26. März 2018 | 20:00 | Einlass 19:30

Vierte Welt, Adalbertstr. 4, Galerie 1.OG, 10999 Berlin

Generell boomt die Berliner Start-Up Szene.

The Start-Up Scene in Berlin is on the rise and working in a Start-Up sounds promising to many. But what is actually lurking behind the facade of the co-working spaces? With the opening of the Google Campus ahead of us we want to talk about the actual working conditions and experiences in Berlins Start-Ups and how to organise and fight collectively. With Mathilde Ramadier, who released 'Bienvenue dans la nouveau monde' about her experiences working in different Start-Ups and Stefania Animento who an active member of the Berlin Migrant Strikers. Translation into English will be provided

Demonstration: Fight Google Campus & Co

This year in spring or summer, Google plans to open its „Berlin Campus“ in the premises of the former Umspannwerk on Ohlauerstraße / Paul-Linke-Ufer. According to Google, this campus will be a place for start-ups to network and exchange. Google’s basic idea for establishing the Campus is to be the first one to spot those concepts that are promising to be the most profitable ones and to win the attracted founders for their company on the long run.

There already exist six other “Google Startup Campus”, e.g. in Sao Paulo and in Seoul. The neighborhoods close to them soon experienced their impacts. In London for example commercial rents doubled within the first two years. However, we do not just critisize that gentrification is boosted by tech-companies like Google. As one of the biggest companies in the world, it also plays an important role for the technological attack. Its main task is collecting and selling data. Data may be the most valuable resource in today’s capitalist economy. The huge amounts of digital data are stored indefinitely – even after e.g a Gmail account. The majority of them are created by using one of the many Google products like the Google search engine (market share 90% in Europe), Google Maps, YouTube, Google Chrome, Google Books or the Android smartphone operating system. With the help of (self-learning) algorithms, mass data that appears to be irrelevant at the first sight will sooner or later be processed e. g. be used for well placed personalised (electoral) advertisement. Furthermore, the company works together with the military, secret services and other state institutions. With „big data“ it has become theoretically possible to analyse social developments. With this possibilty social movements could be fought even before they even exist. With the development of artificial intelligence and the ideology of transhumanism, tech-companies want to adjust humans to machines up to there fusion. Everyone can easily imagine what all this means: The systems power structures will be stabilized and strengthened and exploitation will be optimised.

We think that our resistance against the technological attack symbolized by the Google Campus is important to fight for a better life for everybody – in Kreuzberg and worldwide. In Kreuzberg there is not only Google but many other tech-companies that push gentrification and technologistion of work forward.

Our demonstration will pass by at view of the masses of premises of tech-companies that are already existing in Kreuzberg 36 and you will learn more about them. But resisting places and initiatives, e. g. DeliverUnion, should become a part of the demonstration. Opposition against companies like Google is possible – as, among others, the resistance against „Google Glass“, which led to its failed market launch, has shown.

Let`s show together that Google, but also other actors like Zalando, Deliveroo, RocketInternet etc. are not welcome – neither in Kreuzberg nor everywhere!

A nice life for everybody!

Deutscher Aufruf

A collection of films, media excerpts, archival photos and a public forum all mixed together to help give an overview and develop effective strategies for protecting our communities against the accelerating neo-liberal agendas, neo-tech-colonialism, gentrification, inequalities and displacement. A “Google Campus” is planned to open in Kreuzberg in 2018, at the Umspannwerk on the Paul-Linke Ufer, in a district which is still a drum-beating heart of (multi-)cultural resistance for life + livelihoods in the thriving autonomous zones of Berlin. We’ll have special guests from San Francisco to share their experience organizing direct actions in the midst of the tech industries boom in neighborhoods like The Mission District. And perspectives on the local Kiez initiatives now mobilizing a diversity of tactics to stop the tech titan(s) from invading our city and disrupting our own visions for another possible urban eco-system and better decentralized tech infrastructures.

Special guests will include filmmaker David Martinez ( 500 Miles To Babylon ) and activist Fred Sherburn-Zimmer ( Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco ), Sergey Schmidt and others to represent the local Berlin initiatives.

We welcome discussion in all languages, but films will mostly be in Eng.

Translated from Facebook invitation (https://www.facebook.com/events/172197170039110/):

At the beginning of next year, Google plans to open its seventh Google Campus worldwide at the Ohlauer Strasse substation.

Google is not an innocent actor who only moves to Kreuzberg by chance. The company chose the substation because the neighbourhood was discovered as a resource for the tech industry: after the exploitation and transformation of the liberal San Francisco, it is now the turn of liberal Kreuzberg. This development is in its infancy, and it will affect all those who are still living here, but who cannot or do not want to participate in this transformation. That's why we protest against the move-in of Google.
